International Women’s Day: From Awareness to Agency

I recently came across a quote while watching the film The Greatest Showman with my daughter. "Comfort is the enemy of progress." For me that’s a paradox. In our professional lives and in business, growth requires leaving our comfort zone, whether it’s entering a new market or harnessing AI to drive revenue. But for millions of women and girls, comfort was never an option.

Ahead of International Women’s Day on 8th March, I’ve been reflecting on what the purpose of this day is.  Throughout my career, in order to succeed or make progress, I’ve had to be willing to step out of my comfort zone, out of what feels familiar.  It’s only when you embrace what feels scary and uncomfortable, do you find real hidden value.

However, the reason we even have International Women’s Day or Month, is due to the persistent lack of equality and equity for women and girls. So, while I believe that embracing discomfort is the path to success and progress, the fact is that for millions of women and girls, ‘the norm’ is hard.  We operate in the uncomfortable by necessity.

Many live a life where being uncomfortable, continuously solving problems, experimenting and finding new ways to break through barriers is the ‘normal’.  I’m often asked, “How do I stay resilient?”  Firstly, resilience isn't a choice when progress is the only path forward, and secondly, my tribe.

The Power of the Tribe

I didn’t get here alone. My resilience is fuelled by my "Tribe", the mothers, teachers, college professors who saw a version of me that hadn’t arrived yet.

The colleague turned ‘therapist and ambassador’ all in one.  The workplace sponsor, the industry mentor, the industry peer I met at that networking event that pointed me in the right direction.

My call to action to you: I believe that every person has the power to make a difference in someone’s life. This International Women’s Day, think about whose tribe you could be part of. This is how you make a difference. I believe in the power of one, but also in the impact of many.

#IWD is also about celebrating the women (and men) who made us believe we could.  And to them, I say ‘Thank You’!

Economic Agency: Being the Pilot

A tribe alone isn’t enough for survival and growth. You need Economic Agency. This is the shift from being a passenger in your business to being the pilot. It’s the power to make choices based on execution and data, not guesswork.

In the AI era, this agency is more accessible than ever. When we replace back-office chaos with a proper scaling strategy, we move from surviving to leading. At Bia Innovate, through our consulting and tech offers, we form part of the tribe guiding businesses from guessing to execution.

Impact - CSW70

In March, I’ll be volunteering as part of a tribe of thousands as a participant for UN Women UK CSW70. This year marks the 70th session of the Commission on the Status of Women taking place at United Nations Headquarters in New York From March 9th - 19th. I'll be virtually joining governments, experts, and campaigners to address the critical issues shaping women’s lives today. As a volunteer, I am honoured to stand alongside global change-makers in the fight for gender equality and women’s rights.

This isn’t just advocacy, it’s an extension of the Bia Innovate mission.

I love a celebration, but I want to see a scaling strategy in the hands of women, more so than than an IWD-branded cupcake. Awareness is the start; execution keeps the lights on.
