The Quiche That AI Made

This month, we begin not in the office, but in the kitchen.

On a busy Sunday morning, I decided to turn our family brunch ritual into a teaching moment for my 7-year-old daughter. Standing in our kitchen with a pastry-lined dish and a craving for a vegetarian spinach quiche, I couldn’t remember how many eggs to use or whether to use milk or double cream. This is down to my propensity for improvisation when cooking, and I’m often told that I “never cook the same dish twice”.

Given that my daughter will grow up in an increasingly ‘AI-native’ environment, I saw a perfect opportunity to show her how to solve a problem with AI. I opened ChatGPT, shared an image of the baking dish and pastry, and simply typed: "What's a spinach quiche vegetarian recipe to fit this dish and use this pastry?” Within seconds, I had a starting point!

I love cooking, mostly from scratch. From quick family meals to fine dining, needless to say, I consider myself an experienced cook! But sourcing and tracking the best recipes so I can use them again? That part, not so much. Back to the quiche.

So, scanning ChatGPT’s suggestions, I made some tweaks because I know what ‘feels right’ from experience and I have my preferences. I skipped the garlic and nutmeg (delicious in other dishes but not in my quiche) and used 5 eggs instead of 3, which just didn’t seem enough. And yes, it was double cream! Everything else, from the spinach weight to the oven timings, felt spot on. ChatGPT and I had a bit of back and forth. It now has a note of my quiche recipe preferences and what worked well. And just like that, a delicious brunch came together, quickly. Next time, I know where to go to get my perfect brunch quiche recipe, and also the starting point for my next ‘improvisation’.

💡 Why This Matters

This may seem like a simple brunch anecdote, but it’s a powerful reminder of how AI tools can support us today. Whether you're in finance, marketing or operations, AI doesn’t need to give you the perfect answer. It just needs to give you a smart starting point. You bring judgment, creativity, and experience. That's the key!

Although we are bombarded with lots of AI content and hype, you’d be surprised how few people and businesses are actually using AI to supercharge their businesses, and many haven’t even started experimenting with it. I’m on a mission to change that. In S2:E6 of The Dhosjan Show, The Human at the Heart of Innovation, I talk about what it means to add AI to your org chart. Think of it as your team’s own dedicated smart assistant, an analyst or sounding board. And that’s just the starting point. AI can do so much more than this through specialised agents and other capabilities, but just get started with the low-hanging fruit. And in my view, AI works best when paired with human judgment. Like choosing to ditch the nutmeg.

Are You Ready to Put AI to Work?

The question isn't “Should we use AI?” but “Where can AI drive the most value in our workflow today?”

Here’s how to start:

Frame AI as a Team Member: Think of it as your team’s smart assistant, not a replacement, but a multiplier.

Make It a Measurable Goal: Assign one meaningful AI project to your team’s roadmap or Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) this year.

Fund It: Include AI training as a non-negotiable in your Learning & Development budget.

So, whether you’re launching a startup, leading a finance function, or making brunch with your kids, remember this: You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to ask some simple questions, and let AI help you to get started.
