🤖 The Rise of Autonomous AI Agents in the Finance Function

In an earlier newsletter, ‘AI - Competition and Agents’, we discussed the emergence of Agentic AI, systems capable of autonomous actions to achieve specific objectives.

We noted that simple AI workflows follow predefined steps, while AI agents dynamically direct their own processes, selecting the right tools to achieve a goal. Fast-forward a few short months, and we’ve been consumed with talk of advancements in Agentic AI in every business function.

At Bia Innovate, we've been pondering this question a lot lately: At what point does every professional simply have a 'smart assistant', an AI agent managing ALL aspects of their work life, that proactively interacts with other AI agents on our behalf? As standard, we already optimise content for social media algorithms to drive lead generation. Is optimising business strategy, marketing, and other business functions for AI agent execution the logical eventual step?

What does this mean for Finance Operations?

Consider the teams managing your cash runway, reporting, payments, and financial planning. The integration of AI is no longer about simple automation; it's about deploying autonomous agents for complex financial tasks.

As a Gartner report highlighted, “Agentic AI in finance has the potential to transform finance operations by performing a high volume of complex, judgment-based activities across multiple applications and stakeholders.”

We were particularly reflective when reading a recent article from CloudFO, a company that empowers SMEs to make informed decisions swiftly, using Agentic AI to tackle Financial Planning & Analysis.

They made a key distinction. "Your Business Doesn't Need a Bot. It Needs a Brain."

A simple "bot" requires you to ask all the right questions. A "brain," on the other hand, is a proactive AI colleague that identifies trends, flags risks, and provides insights without being prompted.

For us, proactivity is the defining factor for the future of finance operations. The shift from a reactive bot to a proactive brain is one of the most important evolutions for CFOs to champion.

The future looks bright as we see two major wins to come from deploying autonomous AI agents in finance operations centred on speed and foresight.

  • Velocity: The Real-Time Advantage

This is the speed at which an AI agent processes large data volumes. More critically, it’s the speed at which the business can access real-time metrics, and giving an instantaneous view of performance, current blind spots, and future risks.

  • Instant Scenario Planning

Agentic AI enables dynamic modelling. Imagine the ability to run "Scenario Forecasts in Seconds" allowing you to instantly gauge the impact of sales fluctuations or complex market shifts. Given our prolonged period of economic volatility, transforming uncertainty into proactive strategy has never been more critical.

We highly recommend checking out the full CloudFO article.

As always, implementing these “brains” should align with your business policies on governance, security, accuracy and access control. Review and documentation of the sources and workflows for inputs and outputs, data integrity, auditability and ethical use of data remains paramount.
